5 Days for the Homeless

5 Days for the Homeless is a national campaign where students take on the task of being ‘homeless’ for 5 days. This means no facebook, no blackberry’s or iphones, no macbooks, no eating, no showers, no posessions…..and YES they must still complete ALL academic responsibilities as well as any other commitments they may have. This is all in effort to raise money for youth at risk in Hamilton. The money raised will be in support of the Good Sheppard Centre and more specifically the Notre Dame House.

Notre Dame House is a 24-hour emergency shelter and multi-agency resource centre for homeless and street-involved youth 16 to 21 years of age. It is the ONLY youth shelter in Hamilton. The six-week program uses a unique team approach that pairs each young person with a youth support worker who helps them reach their personal goals using strength based, client centered approaches. Program objectives are achieved through advocacy, case coordination, recreational/ therapeutic programming, informal counseling and connections to housing, education, income resources and other identified needs. Services offered include: a 20-bed emergency shelter and multi-agency resource centre, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year admissions, a drop-in meal program, Monday to Friday, a Section 23 School with two teachers from the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, assignment to a youth support worker to encourage residents’ strengths and aid in working out personal goals, case management and rapport building, safety planning and goal evaluation and review, Mental Health Community Liaison Nurse, access to Nurse Practitioner, General Practitioner, Nutritionist and Psychiatrist, access to Addictions Counselor (AY), aftercare services such as informal counseling, and use of free laundry facilities and telephone, outreach and telephone support.

The campaign 2012 runs from March 11-16 with a goal to raise $10,000 for the Notre Dame House.

If you would like to contribute financially you can make your check payable to Notre Dame House (for income tax receipts this is 100% tax deductible) and can be sent to 14 Cannon Street, Hamilton Ontario, L8R 2M1.

You can make donations online as well at If you would like to contribute in other ways, 5 Days for the Homeless will gladly takes clothing donations, arts and craft supplies, or personal hygiene items as well on campus during the campaign.
